A
dozen tips for a better Garden.
1. Hanging Baskets: Use a bigger wall bracket!
Too many baskets miss catching rain as they are under the
eaves. Many get damaged when the wind blows them against the
brickwork.
2. Hanging Baskets: Use a bigger Basket!
A 10” basket is almost a waste of time. 12” should
be the minimum and a 14” would be even better. More
room, more Compost, more Plants, better Basket – it’s
as simple as that.
3. Never use a Growbag to fill a basket or a Tub
– it’s false economy. An average Growbag contains
enough feeding for 3 young tomato plants for 3 weeks! A good
Compost can feed your plants for a season.
4. Water your Plants - 99% of Plants that
die do so from lack of water.
5. Feed your Plants - Plants may grow without
feeding but they won’t thrive and give the spectacular
results you want. It’s a waste of money to buy Plants
and not feed them. (Don’t forget any established Shrubs
etc - they need feeding too!)
6. Get rid of Weeds – nothing spoils
a garden more. (More on this next week).
7. Buy a Hoe. It’s a great tool. Environmentally
friendly - kills Weeds, tills the soil.
8. Tomatoes: Try Shirley. It has a shorter
distance between the trusses so you can get an “extra”
truss.
9. Feed your Lawn – you will be amazed
at the difference.
10. If you’ve never tried vegetables try Onion
Sets and/or Leeks. They take up less space than most
Vegetables, are easy to grow and store well.
11. Grow Herbs – they are so easy.
Great for cooking, compared to the “Stuff in a Jar”
12. Plant a Tree. Most Trees sold in Garden
Centres are grafted on dwarf root stock and there is one suitable
for even the smallest garden.
