No light bulbs in sight.
The Autumn Bulbs are now in the Garden Centre. We call
them "Autumn Bulbs" because we plant them in the Autumn
yet they are intended for Spring flowering. Every Spring
I get customers in looking for Daffs
and Crocus etc because they see them looking good in their
neighbour's gardens. We do have Bulbs potted up for sale
in the Spring but it is much better
(and cheaper!) to buy the bulbs now.
Daffodils or Narcissus
as we tend to refer to them nowadays are still the biggest
seller. They come in all sizes from dwarf varieties right
up to the full size ones like King Alfred and they are no
longer just yellow in colour.
Bi-Coloured varieties: ones with the petals a different
colour from their centres.
Non yellow varieties: There are white varieties
(Mount Hood), ones that are more orange in colour and even
pinkish ones (Salome).
Double Flowered varieties: such as "Cheerfullness"
have a double row of petals and the flower looks almost
like a rose. Try "Winston Churchill" - it's a stunner.
Multi-headed varieties: Produce more than one flower
per bulb. "Geranium" is a particularly nice variety and
is bi-coloured and fragrant as a bonus!
Fragrant varieties: Yes some varieties actually
have a fragrance! Try "Jonquill" and "Actea" as well as
"Geranium" mentioned above.
Dwarf varieties: "Tete-a-Tete" is probably the best
known. It is also multiheaded giving clusters of flowers
and can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. Try also "Jack
Snipe" and "Pipit".
Daffs represent great value as they can be left in the
ground to "naturalise" and come back year after year. They
will also split each year and produce even more flowers
in following years.
I'll cover other Bulbs over the next few weeks.
